MISSION
The Broken Arrow Police Department will consistently strive to serve its residents by proactively addressing crime, preserving peace, protecting life and property and will be committed to establishing partnerships within the community to focus on concerns and solve problems with fairness, integrity and professionalism.  

PURPOSE: To provide Law Enforcement and Public Safety services to the public; enforce Federal and State Laws and Local Ordinances; maintain order and protect life and property; conduct criminal investigations; perform other public safety related duties.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Patrol assigned districts in a motor vehicle, on foot, or using other methods of transportation. Checks businesses, stores, homes and other premises for criminal violations, suspicious persons or conditions, fire or other disturbances.
  • Apprehend, interview, and make arrests for violations of Federal and State Laws and Local Ordinances; escort prisoners to appropriate holding facilities; register and book prisoners, prepares record of arrest and submits detailed reports of investigation made.
  • Responds to citizen complaints; controls and when needed disperses crowds; cooperates and assists other Law Enforcement Officers, jurisdictions, and agencies.
  • Enforces traffic and parking regulations, directs traffic, investigates traffic accidents and obtains information incidental to the event; observes traffic hazards and submits recommendations for their correction; administers first aid in emergency situations.
  • Maintains a positive and effective relationship with community groups through periodic meetings, working with social agencies and groups.
  • Prepares and maintains field notes; prepares and submits administrative reports; Emergency Orders of Detention; Search Warrants, and similar legal documents; testifies at administrative and court hearings.
  • Assists supervisors as required and may act as an acting supervisor in their absence.
  • Attends and satisfactorily completes periodic trainee courses and instructional meetings to develop and maintain skills in the use, care, and safe operation of firearms, motor vehicles, techniques in self defense, life saving, and criminal law updates.
  • Makes initial and supplementary investigations of crimes in areas such as personal violence, theft, stolen vehicles, missing persons, lost children, and runaways. Participates in undercover investigations of narcotics, gambling, vice, civil and criminal disturbances.
  • Collects physical evidence and performs crime scene investigation, takes photographs, performs surveillance of persons and places.
  • Performs other related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

  • Must be 21 years of age and have at least 64 hours of college credit from an accredited college or university or an associate’s degree. Colleges or Universities must be accredited through one of the following six accrediting agencies:
    • Middle States Commission on Higher Education
    • New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Commission on Institutions of Higher Education
    • North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, The Higher Learning Commission
    • Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities
    • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges
    • Western Association of Schools and Colleges
  • You can go to the following site to confirm if a college or university is accredited and by which agency they are accredited. Search Institutional Accreditation System Must not have been convicted of a felony or a crime involving moral turpitude.
  • Must have no more than 3 moving traffic violations in the past 5 years or have in excess of one at fault accident and two moving traffic violations in the past 5 years.
  • Must have no convictions of operating or being in actual physical control of a motor vehicle while under the influence or impaired by alcohol or drugs, or convictions of careless or reckless driving in the past seven (7) years.
  • Must undergo evaluation similar to the Minnesota Multi-phasic Personality Inventory or its equivalent.
  • Must undergo and pass an extensive background investigation.
  • Subsequent to a tentative job offer must submit to and satisfactorily pass a medical examination as allowed and or required by Federal and State Statutes, including a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Must attend and satisfactorily complete, within one year of initial employment, the requirements of the Basic Police Academy as required under Oklahoma Statute 70 O.S., Section 3311 (Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training), the Broken Arrow Police Department In-Service Orientation Training and the Field Training Officer Programs.
  • No convictions of a “misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.”
  • Must pass polygraph
  • Physical Requirements
    • Far Visual Acuity of at least 20/30 in each eye with or without corrective lenses.
    • Peripheral Vision without correction of 140 degrees in the horizontal median in each eye.
    • Ability to distinguish red and green on a standard Ishihara test for color blindness.
    • On average, hearing loss unaided in the better ear not greater than 40db at 500Hz, 1000Hz and 2000 Hz.
    • An applicant’s medical history and Pension Physical results will be thoroughly reviewed by a physician of the City’s choice, and a determination will be made whether any medical issue or condition exists that could potentially affect the applicant’s ability to perform the basic functions of a police officer.
    Test Date will consist of a written test, requirement to pass is 70%. If the written exam is passed applicants will complete a physical agility course (physical agility course information will be posted shortly). Applicants will then be given the MMPI (psychological exam). Testing day is a long day applicants should plan on being there for ten hours. More information will be sent to applicants regarding test day once their application is received and processed.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must have the ability to effectively communicate, verbally to transmit information via the radio, talk to victims, suspects, etc. and in writing, and deal effectively and courteously with the public and fellow employees.
  • Must be able to observe situations analytically and objectively and record them clearly and completely. Must be able to react quickly and calmly in emergencies.
  • Must possess the physical strength and stamina to chase and subdue fleeing persons and rescue victims. This includes being able to walk and run long distances, jump and stand for long periods of time, crawl (to function in confined spaces), climb (to extreme heights), lift, drag, pull and push at least 185 pounds.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to identify suspects, detect danger, read licenses and tags and possess the aural acuity to understand conversations in quiet and noisy environments, understand radio transmissions, distinguish between car backfires and gun shots, and determine the location of persons in distress.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Police Officers work in the Police Station but primarily in the field - the field consisting of the city limits of Broken Arrow and surrounding areas. Officers will operate out of a Patrol Car or on a Motorcycle and are exposed to extreme conditions of weather, loud noise, dirt, mud, insects, dust and grass.

Police Officers must be prepared for the possibility of body attacks and physical harm while making an arrest.
Police Officers will work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays and will be subject to extended hours, call back and having to testify at court on regular days off.

EQUIPMENT USED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Patrol car or motorcycle; semi-automatic pistols and revolvers; assorted long guns (i.e. shotgun, rifle, etc.); police radios; handcuffs and hand cuff keys; flashlight; baton; computer; traffic control devices, taser and Asp (baton).
